BRAG Blast - 11/7

After disappointing 31-12 Civil War loss Beavs 7's team heads to Palo Alto for Pac 12 championships.

Quick summary from me about the game last weekend. Almost the same scenario that we had down in Eugene last fall accept we scored first and led almost all of the first half until the Ducks scored late in the first half to tie it up 12-12. It was tied up until about the 65 minute mark when the wheels came off the wagon and the Ducks scored three try's to break open what had been a close hard fought game. I regret that I was so pissed and HATE to loose to the ducks that I do not have a full game summary and video highlights prepared for this BRAG blast. Last year we rebounded nicely after the bad taste of the trip to Eugene so I am confident we will rebound again.

PAC 12 SEVENS - How to Watch:

I don't have a link but all the games will be streamed live on the Pac 12 network's website. Last year it was easy to just go to the site and click on to the link. If I can find the link Saturday morning I will send a quick blast out.

Looking Ahead

After the team returns from the Pac 12 tournament it will be all in with a short week to prepare for Western Washington in Bellingham on November 16th. We had several injured players sit out the Civil War so it is my hope that we have them back and ready to knock off WW again.

BRAG Blast- 10/31/19

Beavs Leave it all on the field with Major upset of 8th ranked Western Washington University 24-17! Looking forward to continuing solid play in this weekends Civil War down in Eugene. Kick off at 1pm if you can make it down and show support. Go Beavs!!

Coaches Game Summary 10/26
 Western Washington

The Beavers continued their solid start to the 2019-20 Season with a BIG bonus point win over 2018-19 NCRC Champions Western Washington University. After two rounds, the Beavers are on top of the League with 10 points.

The Beavs crossed the line four times with tries to Freshman Clint Pfeifer, Scrumhalf Gregory Curtis, captain Rees Rosene, and Winger Jackson Davis. Flyhalf Clement added two conversions for a final score of 24-17.

It wasn't the ideal lead up to the match with a few injuries and mid-term exams conflicting with practices. But that wasn't going to be an excuse for not showing up on Saturday with the right attitude against a very good WWU Vikings Side.

In both halves the Beavers opened up plenty of opportunities, which was very pleasing to see. But again, like the UW match, we couldn't quite finish them off. Patience was key - and we were good enough to get over the line with 4 outstanding tries.

Defensively the Beavs were solid and matched the Vikings Physically across the park. This was a big focus leading into the match - after being dominated by them in this area for the last 3+ years.

At the end of the day, it was a BIG win for us. And knowing that we left plenty out there has the boys excited about what's coming up. We now turn our attention to our fixture this Saturday vs. the Ducks. As always, this will be a challenge, especially down inn Eugene. The boys will be up for it - and will be after a little redemption after last year's Fall loss in Eugene.

#constantimprovement #goodblokes

Let's GO!

Thanks for all of the support. It means more to these guys than you may think. Just think back to 24 months ago? Where were we and where are we now?

BRAG Blast- 10/23/19

After a warm up match against Western Oregon that had 11 new players getting significant playing time the Beavers take down University of Washington 27-7 at home in first league match.

This alert contains some fun stuff to kick off the season.
1. Game summary from Coach.
2. Pic of some players going to the hospital after the game to see an injured husky player. In addition, a nice message from the Husky coach.
3. There is a link to the teams photo album that I think most of you would enjoy taking a look at. The oldest pics are at the top with the UDUB game pics last.
4. The college of Engineering had a nice write up recently on one of our stars Juwan Johnson. There is a link incase the letters are too small to read.
5. A coaches spotlight on one of our assistant coaches Trevor Da Silva. It has a pic of him with his dad and his bio.
6. We wrap up this B-Blast with some video of recent highlights and some video of Bronco's and sprints in practice.

Upcoming Game Schedule:

10/26 OSU vs. Western Washington  at HOME
11/2 OSU vs.  Ducks (away)
11/9-10 Pac 7s @Stanford
11/16 OSU vs. Western Washington AWAY

If you can make it to the big game this weekend it starts at 1pm. Lets get the word out and have a big crowd for our rematch of the NCRC 15's championship game last spring. Thanks for all your support of the team.

10/19 OSU vs. University of Washington

The Beavers opened up their 2019-20 Season with an opening win vs. a determined and much improved University of Washington.

The Beavers crossed the line four times with tries to Sophomore Center Wyatt Dillman, debutant Scrumhalf Gregory Curtis, veteran standout Juwan Johnson, and Junior Fullback Cam Castle. Incoming player Reed Sandblast added a single penalty & two conversions for a final score of 27-7 (5-7 HT).

It was a very Physical Match. And unfortunately, a couple of Husky players ended up in hospital with an eye socket break, and a bad concussion. On Sunday (post-game), a bunch of the Oregon State boys visited the Husky Player in hospital, brought him some lunch, and hung out with him for a while and showed their support.  This is what rugby is about.

beavs26.jpg

"I heard a number of Oregon State Players were reaching out .... I would like to express my sincere gratitude for that. We appreciate that very much and that says a lot about the quality of your team's character." UW Head Coach, Will.

Looking ahead...

After a standout 2018-19 season, the boys have been inspired and excited to get back out on the field this season. The first two weeks of the season were solely focused on recruitment, getting the new players up to speed, and having our returners lead that charge. With limited time to prepare, this is always the most challenging time because if you don't get this part right, it can be a very long season.

The good news is that the boys have come together quickly, and developed a culture of inclusivity, fun, player first, work ethic and ONE team (no one bigger than the team). This is not an easy thing to pull off, so full credit must go to the boys and all of the coaches involved. A win vs. UW was the result of plenty of hard work throughout the first few weeks.

We now turn our attention to Western Washington this Saturday. As always, this will be a challenge. The boys will be up for it, and leave everything out on the field.

Beavers Ready to start 2019-20 Campaign

On September 23 the Men of OSU rugby met for their first practice to get our fall started. It looks like we will have 25-35 players on the team with players joining from France, Spain and Samoa that I know of. I was impressed with the new blood and the strong returning class of Juniors to push to be the best we can be. Troy Hall is on board to coach and teach these boys about what it means to be an OSU rugby player and a good human being. Troy will have Winston McCollough, John Mead, Trevor da Silva and Douglas Breitmeyer on the coaching staff. I think these guys are all great guys and will help us continue to chase excellence on and off the field. Below I have attached a pic of the first group and some video's from this year President and leadership team member. I have also linked an audio of Coach Troys first impression after our first practice.

With the world cup happening in Tokyo my wife sent me this twitter clip reminding us of the tour of Wales, Scotland and England back in the fall of 86. Such a great experience with so many good mates. I hope all of you are finding some great ways to enjoy this world cup! Whether your are an Eagle's fan or a fan of another country from around the world its a great time to be a rugby fan! Two of our coaches John Mead and Trevor de Silva have been in Japan and I am looking forward to hearing some first hand stories of the experience they are having when they return to Oregon. FYI The ORSU leadership has worked with Kells Irish pub to air many of the games. I plan on being their for a noon airing of the Eagles vs France this Wednesday. I know they have a much bigger schedule they are airing so feel free to call the Kells on NW 21st for more details.

It was a great day to be out at Pumpkin Ridge! Special thanks to Mike Minervini and all the people at ORSU for their significant support of our fund raising efforts. Thanks to all the Pig Alums that helped also.

Thoughts about Troy from a former coach of his;

I have coached Troy Hall on multiple occasions, as a National Champion winner at the New York Athletic Club as well as on the United States National Rugby Team.

Getting to know Troy and having the opportunity to coach him was a tremendous privilege for me. He was truly a gifted player on the field; a player possessed of multiple talents and the unique ability to carry a team on his shoulders with electric pace and an extraordinary skill set. However, it was it was away from the matches that set Troy apart and prepared him to be a multi-faceted weapon and champion in the heat of battle.

Great teams and national squads always have a great amount of talent at any given time; however, it is the character of a man that sets apart the truly great competitors. Troy Hall is one of those elite players, but he is also a man of superior integrity as well. He defines what an athlete should aspire to be - hard working, humble, successful and respected. Troy worked hard to ensure his success through a committed program of strength and conditioning as well as diet and skill enhancement. He was always prepared to play on game day - and succeed. His demeanor is that of a gentleman - soft spoken and liked and respected by all of his teammates and coaches. Troy saved his biggest statements for the field and accepted the accolades with humility. It has been no accident that he has accomplished what he did throughout his life, and continues to give back and inspire'.

I put this information together to recap what we have done and who we have coaching our club. It is imperative that we get the word out to support the golf tournament and auction. Even if you cant support, if you could volunteer or help spread the word that would be great. We need to secure more golfers asap so we know that our efforts will pay off and the club will continue its progress. I have included three ways to support our efforts. The flier below can be used to mail in a check or forward it to other alums or potential sponsors. Their is also the eventbrite link or the Paypal link in blue so lots of options to support the coaches fund. I look forward to seeing some old faces at the golf tournament and sharing old stories again.

BRAG Blast- 6/8/19 Beavers earn respect from around the country for a gritty effort in the desert!

beavs21.jpg

Recap from Tucson

I was a great experience for our club at the nationals. A little drama with cancelled flights delaying the team getting acclimated to 95 degree weather and 2600 foot elevation but they had trained hard and were ready to take on the challenge. In the first game the team seemed a little out of sorts with a few key mistakes that Florida international University took advantage of and we fell 24-10. In the second game of day one the club took on Mary Washington the eventual #2 team in the country but were able to score a nice try in the second half to fall 24-7. However, something about that game lit a spark in the team and they were not going to lose another game that day. They came out prepared and focused with an almost flawless throttling of the University of Nebraska 24-0. Our defense was stellar and our offense was mistake free. Whenever that happens we can compete. Unfortunately in the Nebraska game we lost one of our solid starters to a broken ankle and it left us really thin for day two. We played the waiting game to see if we would make the cup final (top 8) for day two. Several teams with the same record were tied and due to our point differential we made it as the 7th seed for the cup final on Saturday.

On day two the Beavs drew eventual national champions Lindenwood-Belleville and they were hands down the best club at the tournament. Our score of 36-5 was actually better than the differential in the Championship game between Lindenwood and Mary Washington so I felt good about that one. In game two of the final day we had a rematch with Florida International and the boys left everything on the field while they avenged their earlier loss  with a 12-19 win to put them in the plate final against Stanford deciding the 5th or 6th place team in the country. Late on another hot day the starters had very little rest and they just did not have anything left in the tank as they fell 43-5. All in all it was a very good effort by a team that had not made the tournament in recent memory.

I was able to get a quote from one of my rugby brothers from back in the 80's who live's in Arizona. He made the trip and had some nice things to say;

I relocated to Phoenix in 2006, which has been great but the downside is it obviously limits my visits to OSU to keep up with the rugby team.  The Beavs have traveled to the desert a couple times and it was a real treat this weekend to watch them compete in the National Collegiate 7's Championships in Tucson.  The competition here was incredibly strong with the likes of Lindenwood, NC State, U Arizona, and many others.  The Beavers put in a great showing and earned the respect of this rugby knowledgeable crowd.  Yells of "Go Beavers" could be heard from many wearing a variety of school jerseys.

Coach has them prepared and confident and they handled the ball very well.  In tournament 7's with 7 minute halves it only takes a couple misses  to be the difference between win or loss and that was the case.  A strong showing and win over Florida Int'l Univ. was fantastic putting the Beavs into the finals competing for 6th place nationwide.

Looking forward to what these men can do in the fall after this great experience in both team bonding and skill testing.

Go Beavs!

I am smiling from ear to ear with pride for our current OSU rugby team. It's pretty exciting to think all three divisions D1, D1AA & D2 of college 7's rugby will be held at the same tournament and our boys will be there. Click on the logo above from your computer (mobile access not working) for a link to the USA Rugby website with all the details about the tournament. Below are two links to the drone footage that Fontaine McCullough (current captains brother and coaches son) has put together for us. Pretty exciting stuff I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did. Thank you all for taking the time to read my blasts and show support for the club we all enjoyed playing for.

BRAG Blast- 4/29 Beavs dominate day two of NCRC 7's Championship tourney!! Start preparation for the D1-AA Mens Rugby Championships in Tucson, Arizona May 24th and 25th.

A truly great story...

Tough Day 1. Win vs. Boise 22-5, followed by a shock loss vs. WSU in a hail storm, 23-19.

We had an honest and open team meeting last night. Watched the drone footage - and chatted about what we wanted to do and accomplish today. We had clarity.

The challenge? We had to play defending champs Western Washington in the semifinals.

We lost two of our backs in the first 2mins with tournament ending injuries. But fellas, we are developing some pretty resilient guys down here - we stuck at it - lifted - and came out on top 26-14. Boys were ecstatic.

We celebrated for about 5mins - why not? I wanted to let the boys know that you have to enjoy those moments, always.

Championship vs. WSU.

The boys played with some edge, especially after losing to them yesterday. There was no way we were going to let that happen again. And we didn't.

Win, 31-7.

We were by far the most dynamic team their on the field. But most importantly, we were the most together and bonded unit by a country mile.

This is a great group, going to Nationals. A huge effort.

Another month of 7s and coaching coming up for me. Get ready.

The above was the first email the board received from Coach Troy after the tournament. I received some audio from coach to the alums that I cant add without one of my technical assistants so look for it in a second BRAG Alert this Thursday with lots of content about the big weekend and how the boys are preparing for the Nationals! Boy it makes me feel so good to see us continue to climb the mountain. The experience at Nationals will be huge towards our goals of consistently putting the club in a great position to compete at the highest levels. Time to raise some more money for the coaches fund. Go Beavs!

Sincerely,

Geoff Latham
BRAG and Alumni Board
Chairman

PS I could not wait to get the word out about the championship so this Blast is pretty small but huge in results.

Don't forget to save the date of August 3rd for this years OSU Alumni Rugby Golf Tournament and auction. We are looking for volunteers to help with the golf tourney and of course anyone who can help sell sponsorship packages to businesses and rugby supporters. I expect to have the full package and options very soon to forward to everyone. We can also accept gifts or packages for the auction. Anyone with some experience or desire to help the board with this aspect of our fund raising is encouraged and welcomed to email me at wookiebeav86-88@nickyusa.com.

FINAL

OSU 22 vs. Ducks 7

Beaver rugby alums came to Corvallis for some camaraderie and some casual rugby. I flipped about 50 burgers for the players, coaches and alums before the players headed over to the field for some 7's and 15's. With the late game the emphasis was on a good time and not quality rugby. The alums lost a close 7's match and then dominated a mostly B side in 15's. I for one was happy to see a good turnout and to get a chance to meet so many alums I did not know.  However, it has been agreed that any future Alumni games will be held sometime between 10-12 am so the social aspect will start AFTERWARDS. Their were no pics of the player hosted social afterwards but I had a fantastic time socializing, BSing and sharing stories of rugby trips with alums from other era's.Thanks so much for all the alums who participated or just made the socials.

BRAG Blast- 4/5 Beavs Head Back to WWU to kick off their 7's season

The team is on its way to Bellingham and is excited to kick off their Spring 7's season. After taking a couple weeks off for spring break they are back at it again up North. It should be a good tournament and a great test for the team. I will have a recap and hopefully some video next week of the outing.

Unfortunately the Alumni game next weekend was moved to 7pm under the lights at the Intramural field. Peavy field was a maybe but the significant amount of rain expected this week most likely would have nixed that as an option so we need to go with the late start. I am going to talk to the team about a possible luncheon at 2pm in town and if we come up with a good plan I will blast it out to everyone next Thursday. For now the women's Rugby team will finish up its 7's tourney around 6pm and then all players can warm up. I will plan on setting up a tent and welcome all players and Alumni to come between 5-5:30 for some pre-game meet and great between the alums, players and coaches.. Go Beavs!

BRAG Blast- 3/19 The Beavers best 15’s season in years comes to an end in the NCRC Championships falling to a solid WWU team 32-7

It was a great day in Bellingham for the big Rugby game between the Beavers and Wolves from Western Washington. It was a big step in the right direction towards winning the NCRC Championship and getting to the sweet 16 but that championship will have to wait another year as the Beav’s lack of depth hurt us and we saw our Championship hopes fade in the second half. I will let coach Hall recap in more detail below but for a dad that watched his son and the rest of the Beav’s leave it all on the field I was extremely proud of all the young men in Orange and Black. We ended our season ranked 22nd in Division 1AA per the flo Rugby report. No one seemed satisfied that I talked to and they are committed to working hard to reach bigger heights next year.

From the get go, you could tell both teams were up for it. Western Washington new they were in for a battle all over the field, and for most of the game, they got it. I also think it is important to keep in mind, that no team has come close to the Vikings in years. Yes, they still won, and in a convincing fashion as they ran in a few second half tries. They deserved the title and the seed into the sweet 16. The boys were incredibly upset at the final whistle - knowing they came up just short. But there were plenty of lessons to take away (coaches & players) from the day - and are now a better team for it. With that said, the Beaver supporters out there should be proud of how far this team has come in less than 18 months.

One of our goals at the beginning of the season was to make the playoffs. So to finish 2nd, is something we don't take for granted - and it is important that we focus on the positives. (don't get me wrong, the boys weren't happy about being 2nd!). The passion, belief, and commitment is there. So, we now flush that loss, and look forward to an exciting sevens season beginning the first week of April.

WWU GAME FILM

Lastly, I have attached two images for you. One of the boys after our final practice of the winter. And the other a small notebook the boys gave to me up in Bellingham. Each of them took the time and said a few words of appreciation to me, talked about their experience at OSU, and what it means to be apart of this program. For me, this is what it is all about, and it meant a lot. It makes the travel, and weeks away from my wife and two young kids, a little easier.

Get behind this team. There is no closer unit in the Pacific Northwest.

Cheers,
Troy

Get to know our Captains

Prior to the playoff game against the University of Oregon I took a moment to talk to Captains Keirran McCullough and Alan Hopps about the team and where we are at. These two guys went through the worst couple years and ended their 15’s collegiate careers in the NCRC Championship. I feel that without the commitment shown and their leadership the turn around of the program would not have happened so quickly. Eighteen months ago the rebuild began.  They bought into what coach Hall and Winston wanted to implement into our culture and philosophy as a team and the rest of the players have gone all in.

April 7s schedule:

April 5-6: Tournament in Bellingham, WA
April 13: Alumni match
April 20: Tournament at Oregon State
April 26-28: Regional Qualifier at Pullman, Washington

*Note: To get to Nationals, we will need to win the Pullman Tourney. Nationals will be played at the end of May in Tuscon, Arizona.

The Oregon State Men's Rugby Team reaches NCRC Cup Final after a resilience display on Monday evening vs. a very passionate & physical Ducks side.

After a messy week figuring out where and when this playoff match was going to be played, we ended up at home, at OSU, playing in front of our fans (although it sounded more like a home game for the Ducks!). We went into the game 3 key players down; which meant we had to play multiple players out of position, as well as bring in a freshman lock, Jeff Buxton, who started playing this season. There is no doubt we were up against it, and it felt that way throughout the contest. But we have been working hard on staying tight as a group, being there for one another when times get tough, and being resilient. We went to places we haven't been in 18 months, we were down, but we found a way to come out on top 24-23.

It was a scrappy beginning to the game. We had all of the territory and possession in the first 20mins, but failed to execute at least 4-5 times (try scoring opportunities). However, we did take our moment, eventually. 20m out, Tejas Godbole went quick off a penalty, hit inside center Juwan Johnson on a typical tackle busting run, who offloaded to Sophomore Dane McKinney for the score (his 3rd try in 2 games).

7-0.

The Ducks scored next, penalty.

7-3.

And then again with a pick and go try through there forwards.

7-8.

We returned the favor when Juwan Johnson scored an opportunistic try turning defense into attack just before halftime.

14-8 (HT)

A poor start. The Ducks scored tries at the 44th and 48th minutes. The first off a scrum turn, with their 7 picking the ball up and going 10m to score. The second to their physical and dynamic winger in the right corner. The boys were down, 14-20 with time winding down. Rugby is about momentum and territory, and the Ducks had it all with 15 to go.

14-20

Somehow, we found our way with a little possession at the right end of the field. After a couple of good runs up the middle, scrumhalf Wyatt Dillman hit Juwan at first receiver who threw a 15m pass to center Tejas Godbole who hit it at top speed and went through a gap in the Ducks defense and ran 40m to score under the posts. Tejas nailed the conversion to put us back up by 1.

21-20.

The fun wasn't over. We were back at our end of the field, defending well. But our discipline let us down, and within range of the posts. The Ducks kicked it, and they went ahead.

21-23.

Back and forth we go. It was tense, the boys felt it and wanted it. We get back to the right end of the field and win a penalty, 40m out. Tejas signals for posts, but misses to the left. Ducks 22m dropout, and another penalty to us from the same position. Tejas steps up again, and this time, it goes through.

24-23.

The final 2-3 minutes were intense. We held the ball, showed great composure, and kept possession until the final whistle.

Final score, 24-23.

We were up for it, but execution let us down. But we made up for it with heart, determination and teamwork. You can teach skill, tactics and rugby - all fixable and we will get to work this week. But there is no way we would have won if we were not a unit moving in the same direction. All of the time we have put in as a group on and off the field is for moments like that.

The boys found a way, to win, when we had no momentum, no territory, and down players.

The Beavers will now travel to Bellingham, WA, this weekend to take on the Western Washington Vikings in the NCRC Championship match. Again, a place (a final) we have not been to in years. We believe in each other, and we can't wait to go at them like we did in the Fall (a loss 24-34).

OSU vs UO Game Summary by Geoff Latham

As an Alum and a dad of a current OSU player I could not be prouder of the lunch pal effort by our young men in Orange and Black. From the moment I walked up to the field I knew our boys were dialed in. It starts with a culture change and a commitment to set the bar high and this team has it. From the opening kick off in really crappy conditions our defense was stellar again. It was apparent the bigger duck pack intended to pic and go or ruck all day long but they came up against a united stone wall of solid tackling and communication. Going with our back up scrum half did not set us back a bit and we pulled out to a 19-0 lead that could have easily been 30 something to zip if a couple of close ones on the try line had gone our way. We came so close to getting home field advantage this weekend but our boys have won three of the last four against the ducks! All in all it was a great day to be a beaver rugby player and fan.

Coaches Match Report -

Oregon State vs. University of Oregon 2/23/19
6:00pm, Student Legacy Park, OSU

On a wet and rainy Saturday evening, we came out on top over a physical Ducks Team, 19-7. This was a quality outing after an under-par performance in the fall vs. the Ducks.

We had not played for a few weeks and were eager to get back on the field. With both us and UO already in the playoffs, there was still plenty to play for so the match was always going to be a cracker! There were a couple of other factors that came into play as well. To play a home semi-final on 3/2, we had to beat Oregon by more than 18 points and score 4 tries. The challenge became that much more difficult when the weather turned on us. But with that said, we were well up for it, even in the awful weather, but just came up short.

Defense was the name of the game. In preparation for this match we spent a good amount of time working on our defensive structure and linespeed. We knew that if we could pressure the Ducks every time they had possession, we could test their skill levels with ball in hand, and in the rain. Defensively, we were sharp, and will look to continue that in the playoffs.

Attack was great at times - but plenty to work on and need to be more ruthless when we have the ball. We are putting a huge emphasis on 'tempo' at practice. We want to be the most dynamic and creative attacking team in our League. We scored 3 brilliant tries vs. the Ducks. 2nd year player, Dane McKinney (wing) scored a brace, and No. 8 Ian Mann scored the other. All 3 tries were scored on the edges, attacking the ducks out wide. Senior, Tejas Godbole converted 2/3.

Final Score: 19-7.

Following the A-side match was a 12 a-side B-side match! These matches are so key in the development of our younger players. The passion is there, and the boys loved every minute of it out there. Thank you to Winston for refereeing this one.

Lastly, we are looking forward to the challenge of traveling to Eugene on Saturday, and putting in a massive performance. The boys are up for it - and will be the first time in a playoff match in a long time.

Moving forward....

Meet the starters. Presenting of the jerseys video.

BRAG Blast - Beavers leave it all on the field against WWU but fall 31-21. Lots of other things about the fall season to be thankful for.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with family! My wife Melody and I spent the evening with five ruggers still in Corvallis and cooked a turkey feast in our RV for all of us. It was a great opportunity to talk about the past 15 months with Troy as head coach and how the trajectory of our program has changed. No league wins in the two years prior, to seven wins last year in the B pool to almost knocking off returning champions Western Washington the weekend before last.

Match Report: OSU vs. WWU (11/17/2018)

Score at halftime: OSU 21 - WWU 10
Final score: OSU 21 – WWU 31

Final game of the fall season. We are 2-1 in the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference, having demolished Boise State and U. Washington, and lost to U of O in a match we know we should have won. Western Washington U. has been solidly the top team in the NCRC in recent years, and a couple weeks ago they beat the Ducks 66-7, with a strong pack scoring 9 of their 10 tries. We were missing starting forwards Ian Mann, Alan Hopper and Jake Kasiah, along with three impact reserve forwards. We’ve recently moved second-year backs Colton Buchanan and Dane McKinney into the forward pack because of their solid tackling, but have had little time to build their set piece skill set. On paper, the Beavers were definite underdogs going into this match.

But we came out swinging, playing at a level not seen for the Beavers in many years. WWU won their possession on their opening kickoff and played for 11 phases. Our defensive structure, line speed and individual tackles looked like a professional rugby team and WWU was at a loss for how to crack our defense. We eventually won possession at the breakdown, and after several sharp phases Kieran McCullough kicked far ahead into open space – a good chase by Tejas Godbole, Dane McKinney and Cam Castle won us possession and a couple phases later a penalty by WWU at the breakdown yielded a lineout 15 meters out.  A well-conceived backs play off the lineout set up blindside winger Cam Castle for an inside scamper across the try line. Tejas Godbole hit the conversion and five minutes in it’s OSU 7 WWU 0.

The next few minutes were a repeat. WWU wins possession off their kickoff on the 10-meter line and the Beavers play intense tenacious defense for seven phases, driving WWU backwards and the unrelenting pressure leads to a WWU knock on in the backs. Off our scrum Kieran again kicks ahead into space and another good chase pressures the receiver into a knock on. We play 7 phases off our scrum but are penalized at the breakdown. Play continues with solid Beaver defense but an offsides penalty plus 10 meters for talking at the ref gives WWU the ball in our red zone. After a bunch of phases the ref misses a WWU knock-on and a few play later their forwards power over the try line. We are up 7 -5 after 14 minutes.

Twelve minutes later after back-and-forth play around midfield, another Beaver kick and chase puts us in WWU territory and the structure of our attack in the wide channels is working well. Blindside flanker Dane McKinney pickups up a loose ball at the breakdown and scampers 15 meters to dot it under the posts. The Beavers are up 14-5 and we’re looking the clearly better team with good structure and variety in our offensive attack and aggressive defensive line speed giving WWU fits.

We fumble the kick off backwards and are playing defense in our red zone and give up a penalty at the breakdown. WWU scores on a simple 5-meter forwards lineout play that we don’t defend well. Ouch. OSU 14 - WWU 10.

After some back and forth second phase play, lock Kyle Lantow makes a nice offload in the wide channel to Dane McKinney who burns three individual tackles and scores his second try before the half-time buzzer. OSU takes a commanding 21-10 lead, reflecting our best half of rugby in 5+ years and a far better display of offensive and defensive structure and decision making than the NCRC leader.

Second half. Beavers kick off and show solid defensive structure again, but we’re going a bit high in tackles and giving 5 meters on several WWU phases. WWU is penalized and we kick for touch to their 10-meter line. We lose the lineout to the first pod in an easy WWU steal off our very predictable lineout call. The first of many lost lineouts in the second half. A couple minutes later after good defensive phases we turn over the ball but throw an errant pass in the centers; WWU kicks it forward behind our wing and our fullback misses an easy tackle on the touch line, giving WWU a 70-meter try and a closer margin 21-17.

A few phases of good defense after we kickoff and we tackle WWU into touch. Again, they easily win our lineout thrown too low to the first pod and we tackle them into the opposite touch line. WWU again disrupts our lineout but we manage to get the ball and a penalty so we kick for touch and have a lineout again well into their territory. WWU again steals our lineout, this time on a poor throw to the back pod. Our fullback drops a high box kick but after their scrum our strong defense again wins a turnover and after a WWU penalty we kick down to 25 meters out. This time we go to our short man in the lineout and win it (good decision) but don’t put points on the board. Several series later our fullback doesn’t see our winger’s space out wide and instead kicks 40 meters ahead but straight into touch so it comes back to our 30-meter line. We play good defense again, force a kick, and due to playing penalty advantage we give a short 10-meter pop kick ahead and the ref calls advantage over way too soon (poor ref decision there). A minute later WWU is penalized again and we kick to touch 40 meters upfield, and again lose our lineout to the first pod. Ugh.

We play a lot of defense in our red zone, and after a questionable high tackle penalty we let WWU quick tap and hit directly in for a try, to take the lead 24-21 with 18 minutes remaining. 10 minutes later WWU scores again as our defense is losing some punch after so much time defending in our red zone, and only one impact reserve forward coming on. The final score remained at 31-21. We couldn’t manage field position in the second half because we were losing all our lineouts, which put our backs against the wall for most of the half. We had opportunities to score in the green zone in the closing 5 five minutes but we coughed it up and WWU put the ball into touch at the closing whistle. We completed the evening with a full B side match – good fun for everyone and all the Beavers got as much playing time as possible.

The program we are rebuilding with head coach Troy Hall is really showing dividends. Overall, we showed vs. WWU that we can compete and outclass any team in our league. With some adjustments to our lineout, some healthy forwards reserves, and better play at fullback we would have won this game to put us at the top of our standings. We’re well-positioned for the second half of our season – four Saturdays in February, followed by NCRC playoffs the first two Saturdays in March.

Coaches and players were able to connect with a group of Beaver Alumni supporters before the match, and we’re working on ways to build stronger connections and support for this Beaver team that is growing in skills and know-how. It’s an exciting time for Beaver Rugby and we have the opportunity now to cross the line and lift this team to its full potential!

Fundraising Note:

Below is a plea from our teams VP Rees Rosene. Rees is a sophomore that has started every game since he entered OSU as part of last years solid freshman class.

Hello Everyone,

We recently finished our fall season with a record of 2-2. Over the course of four league games this term we managed to put up 187 points, while conceding only 108. We also won two big games in early November at the PAC 7s championship tournament at Witter Field, Cal's famed rugby stadium, beating Utah and Stanford, and just two points shy of winning the Plate final vs. USC on a missed conversion. We won the respect of all present and put the OSU Beavers solidly back on the radar for PAC rugby. We just finished with a great match against Western Washington, where both teams were pushed to their limits. the match ended 31-21 in favor of WWU, but great strides in the development of our team were on display for the many alumni and fans who came out to support.

We are writing you to ask for the opportunity to have Coach Troy back leading the team in 2019 and to continue with the upward trajectory of the program. He has done so much for the club in terms of bringing energy, enthusiasm, and a vast knowledge of the game to our club. We have many players who are now in our starting lineup, and among the top try scorers in the league, who started playing as freshman last year, or just picked up rugby this year. We all recognize how hard he works for our team to improve each player and create a culture around the club that develops rugby players to their maximum potential. It is for these reasons that we ask you to donate to the new Beaver Rugby Alumni Group 501c3 so that Troy can continue to develop our skills in January.

Sincerely,
Rees Rosene

BRAG Blast - Western Washington Vikings coming to town for a big game under the lights. Recap of Pac 12 7's Championship

The game this Saturday is scheduled for 6pm under the lights at Student Legacy Park. The undefeated Western Washington and returning NCRC Champions will be a huge match for our young beaver team. The boys are working hard this week to do all they can to play their best and get the 'W'. This will be a big test and the final game of the fall, so to mark the occasion the rugby board has decided to host a tailgater prior to the game from 3:30 to 5:30 just southwest of Reser Stadium at the edge of the parking lot by the trees. Look for the two 36ft motorhomes with rugby looking guys barbecuing. The tailgate is a short walk from Student Legacy Park.

Game Summaries - UO and Pac-12 Sevens

Match Report: OSU vs. Boise State U. (10/27/2018)

Score at halftime: OSU 5-  UO 10
Final score: OSU 15 – UO 32

OSU came down to Eugene to play U of O following two decisive wins, putting 149 points on the board in our first two league matches, and having beaten the Ducks twice last season. Perhaps we were a bit overconfident, perhaps it was our lack of discipline at the breakdown – 17 penalties and 3 yellow cards – or maybe just a lesson that we are still building and need to continue to raise our level of play each week. We started out well enough, playing in the Ducks half and scoring the first try, with fullback Cameron Castle receiving the ball wide off good phase play, putting on a nifty spin move for five points. UO responded with a try five minutes later by their #8 with forwards attack up the middle. At 20 minutes lock Caleb Stanley got the first yellow for a second penalty of not rolling away in the tackle. Shortly before halftime UO’s speedy winger scored on a nicely executed kick and chase. 10-5 at the half.

We were penalized again one minute into the second half and the Ducks added 3 points on a penalty kick, and another 5 five points on a try by their flanker.

OSU responded with a try by winger Jackson Davis scoring in the corner, taking it to 18-12 as Tejas Godbole hit the conversion. At 60 minutes new flanker Colton Buchanan put in a hard tackle but earned our second yellow card for lifting the ball carrier above horizontal. Playing down a man again, we yielded another try and conversion, putting the score at 25-15.

Penalties and some missed tackles gave U of O good field position and possession throughout a good bit of the game, particularly in the second half. At the 73rd minute Juwan Johnson got our 3rd yellow for continuing his clear out too far and tackling the man without the ball. A bit of frustration there; and a couple minutes before the final whistle, playing a bit loose with the ball to try to close the gap instantly flyhalf Kieran McCullough threw a miss pass that was intercepted for a converted try, producing a final score of 32-15 in favor of UO.

To a man we know we played below our potential on the day and while it’s never a happy event to lose the civil war game, it was a good wake up call for us after two decisive wins to start our league season.

PAC 7s Championship at Witter Field, Cal’s famous stadium, Nov. 3rd & 4th

OSU’s last trip to the PAC 7s tournament was in 2015 where the Beavers lost every match, generally by a wide margin. In 2016 we took last place at the NCRC championship tournament in Spokane.

Beginning in 2017 new head coach Troy Hall has driven a dramatic turnaround, with our Beavers taking second place at the NCRC 7s championship tournament in Bellingham last fall, followed this year by a strikingly strong showing last week at the PAC 7s championship tournament. OSU were legitimately the darlings of the tournament, taking fifth place, with a 2-3 record beating Utah and Stamford, scoring 68 points, and impressing all at Witter Field with our smart structured defense, aggressive attack, and fiery energy every minute of every match. OSU is seriously back on the radar for the followers of PAC Rugby following our showing in Berkeley. Some of our OSU Alumni supporters were cheering us on down in Berkeley, taking great pride in our Beaver performance. The commentators, Cal head coach Jack Clark, and our opposing players and coaches all expressed appreciation for our bringing strong competitive play – as the only representative of Northwest Rugby – down to the Bay Area once again in a new era.

We have been focusing exclusively on building 15s ruby this fall with our new team, and so devoted just three practices to 7s, just in the days immediately leading up to the tournament. Our expectations were high for a fun time, good bonding, and a learning experience, but we honestly went into the tournament as major underdogs, with half of our team having never played college 7s. Our success is truly a testament to the new culture and style of play we are building over the past 14 months for Beaver Rugby.

The tournament opened with OSU facing U. of Arizona, who defeated Cal to win in last year’s final. We were a bit hesitant and nervous off the opening kickoff, maintaining possession for two minutes but moving backwards and eventually turning the ball over for a UA try, followed by a second UA try a couple minutes later. But we dug deep with tough defense just before the halftime break, moving the ball outside to sophomore Ian Mann who scored in the corner. 14-5 at the half. UA had a strong second half and closed it out 26-5, but we knew that straightening out a few errors would bring us success and we were pumped to take on Utah in our second match on Saturday.

Juwan Johnson added our first try against Utah, following a creative kick and chase by Tejas Godbole. Utah responded minutes later. 5-5 at halftime. Strong defense in the second half and an exciting kick and chase by Kieran McCullough, who smartly tackled the receiver in Utah’s try zone, led to an OSU five-meter scrum, then penalty to us, and heads up shifting the ball to Cam Castle who scored in the corner.

Our third match on Saturday was a loss to Arizona State 19-5, which set us up to win the Plate if we could go 2-for-2 on Sunday vs. Stanford and winner of USC/UCLA.

Our opening match vs. Stanford was brilliant, dominating 31-0 until the final minute, with tries by Jackson Davis Juwan Johnson, Kieran McCullough, Tejas Godbole and Dane McKinney. We conceded one try on the closing buzzer. OSU 31 Stanford 5.

Facing a tough USC team in our final match, we struggled a bit tackling their English star Cesar and were down 14-5 at the half. Juwan Johnson put in a particularly strong second half, with crunching defense and two tries, clearly our player of the tournament. We outscored USC two tries to one in the second half and but for a couple missed conversions would have won the match and taken the Plate Final. USC 19 OSU 17.

Our successes for the weekend included smart defensive structure and communication, led by Tejas Godbole, strong tackles by Juwan Johnson, Cam Castle, Wyatt Dillman, Ian Man and others, and occasional moments of brilliance on offense. Our balanced tries – one a piece by freshman Wyatt Dillman, rookies Jackson Davis and Ian Mann, Dane McKinney and veterans Tejas Godbole and Kieran McCullough; plus two by quick-stepping Cam Castle and four strong tries by Juwan Johnson – underscore our excellent teamwork and hustle on offense and defense. Our positive joyful attitude throughout the tournament and intense hustle and commitment were recognized by all present. Besides all the accolades received from the TV commentators, most importantly we know that we put our hearts into it and did our best, setting us up for building more success in the future.  Head coach Troy Hall was a feature of the TV coverage, with the commentator even claiming that Troy played at Cal years ago – not true, but they wish it was so! It was seriously excellent visibility for the growing strength of Beaver Rugby, putting us back on the map as a strong competitor in PAC Rugby world.

On November 10 we traveled with our Developmental side to play COCC in Bend. It was a good opportunity for our newer players to get some good game time. Our closing match for the Fall season on November 17 is on our home turf vs. Western Washington University, currently the top NCRC team and winner of last year’s season. It will be a big challenge and test of the strength of what we’re building so far with this new Beaver Rugby team.
